Why packaging matters
Silver is heavy and hard-edged. Poorly packaged silver can pierce packaging, shift in transit, and damage itself or other items. Good packaging keeps your parcel secure in transit — and every consignment is covered up to £5,000 if anything is lost on the way.
What you'll need
A sturdy cardboard box (double-walled preferred), bubble wrap or foam padding, newspaper or packing paper as gap fill, parcel tape, and if you have it, the original box for a canteen or tea service.
Step by step
1. Wrap individually: Wrap each piece separately in bubble wrap. This prevents scratching and stops items clinking against each other in transit. 2. Layer the box: Start with a layer of padding at the bottom. Place wrapped items in the centre, not touching the box walls. Fill gaps with scrunched newspaper. Add a top layer of padding. 3. Knife blades: Wrap particularly carefully — blades can puncture boxes if not well cushioned. 4. Teapots and hollowware: Stuff the interior with tissue or newspaper before wrapping to prevent the shape from being crushed. 5. Seal firmly: Use strong parcel tape across all seams.
Royal Mail's guidelines require that items are "adequately packaged." Double-wrapping valuable items and using a double-walled box keeps everything secure in transit.
